Ah, Olympics...

Sarah, Jay and Simon came over this past weekend for some Olympics, HD-style. Some highlights of our mini-event were watching sports that we had never seen on TV before (field hockey and handball, I'm looking in your direction). Out of this came some classic comments:

While watching what we decided was field hockey:

David: Do we (the USA) compete in this sport?
Sarah: We're not even sure what this sport is!

While watching what we decided was handball:

Jay: Um, I have some questions as to why this is an Olympic sport...
Sarah: It looks like water polo without the water.
Sarah (a little later): This is the best sport ever!

While watching sabre fighting (aka Fencing):

David: They could not possibly make this more like they were playing on the moon (commenting on the hi-tech uniforms, helmets that glowed when a player was hit and the overall darkness surrounding the players).

I do believe that the game is called hockey. The version that you guys play on ice is strangely termed ice hockey. Unfortunately the US views this differently from the rest of the world.

Similarly, football actually involves 11 players per team kicking a spherical ball towards the opponents' goal. The sport that is popular in the US (which is a softer version of our rugby !) is known as American football.

Good to see you blogging regularly again !

Andy will be happy to learn that NBC's on-screen graphic displays "football" games as such during the Olympics. Same with "hockey" (instead of "field hockey").

But back to handball for a minute... what a great sport! (Assuming that's indeed what we were watching.) If there was a local team here, I'd totally go see them play.
