Much Love for the Metro

Here is why I love the Metro:

Last Friday, as I was running 7 and a half minutes late (MST) per my schedule to get to the airport to leave for points north, the Metro train I was riding came to a grinding halt between 2 stops.

Normally, when something abnormal such as this happens, a conductor comes on and says something unintelligible. People look up from their papers puzzled, trying to discern what could have possibly been said. ("Did he just say there was a rabbit on the tracks?") They then delve right back into their reading, knowing that they do not control their fate on this day.

This was not what happened to me. Back to the grinding halt, and my slight paranoia at not making my flight:

After a minute or two, the conductor comes on the PA system and says: "Thank you all for riding Metro. Unfortunately we are experiencing some technical difficulties. If the train begins to move, you know that I have done my job."

The people who normally are not paying attention to any of the PA announcements looked up, surprised that a) they could understand the conductor; and b) that he said something slightly humorous. After they had processed these two things, the conductor came back on."Oh, and if the train does not move, I still know what I am doing, and if I can't get it to move, neither can anyone else."

I love the Metro.
